Watch out for Scammers posing as your social media friend.

Also known as "spoofing". Scammers are using fake social media accounts under the name of the victim’s friends and family to make it easier for them to trick people into sending them funds. These scammers extract information as well for it to be used on another victim.

How to Spot a Fake social media friend?

• New friend requests from a person you are already connected to in your social media accounts.

• They need funds right away – These scammers are in hurry and offer multiple payment options for the fund transfer. Common scenario is asking for funds related to an emergency or a health-related event.

• Different Name in profile vs what is in the URL – the name might be modified for the purpose of reaching out to you.

• The way the person communicates is different from your previous conversations with them.

• The profile who reached out to you is either posting too many ads or no history at all.

Some fraudsters may also pretend to be Komo on social media! Always look for the blue check beside our name! Komo only has two official channels on FB and one official channel on Instagram.

Remember!

• If you have seen signs that the person is a scammer. Verify if the person you are speaking with is indeed your friend. Ask them personal things that may help you confirm if the person is indeed your friend or relative.

• If you are sure that you are dealing with a scammer – Report the profile using the built-in reporting function of the social media site.
